Students gather for young leaders’
event TEAGAN MCMANUS
9/03/2009 10:37:00 AM
More than 7000 primary school leaders from across the State gathered in Sydney for ‘National Young Leaders Day’ at the Entertainment Centre on February 23.
Primary captains Issy Plasto and Hugh Edwards and SRC representatives Justen Beehag, Taylor Giddings, Georgia Knowles and Brad Edwards represented St Mary’s Central School.
“We learned about leadership and what it is,” Justen Beehag said.
“We also learned how to make it around obstacles,” Brad Kitch said.
All of the students agreed that they enjoyed the experience.
Some of the speakers at the event included McLeod’s Daughters star Bridie Carter, Sunrise sports anchor Mark Berretta, author James Roy and Olympic volleyball
gold medallist Natalie Cook who taught the students to “fake it until you make it”, always smile and if an obstacle comes your way, go around it.
The students would like to thank the parents who dedicated their time to take them to the event.
“A big thanks to Bernadette and Nick Knowles, Anne Edwards and Kate Plasto who took us there,” Georgia Knowles said.
“It was amazing to see 7000 primary school children at once,” parent Anne Edwards said.
“James Roy spoke really well when he said ‘dig deep inside to be self determined’.
“It was a great opportunity to be among people like Bridie Carter and to listen to their experiences.”
Inspiration for tomorrow’s leaders 13/03/2009 11:23:00 AM
Four school leaders from Uralla Central School heard from high profile guest speakers at the Halogen Young Leaders Conference.
The girls travelled to Sydney for the conference at the Entertainment Centre.
They joined with 7000 young leaders from all over the state to learn leadership skills.
The students heard of great leaders who have made a positive difference to the world.
The guest speakers included actress Bridie Carter, author James Roy and Olympic beach volleyball gold medallist Natalie Cook.
Emilia Russell, one of Uralla Central School’s captains said she learnt that ‘when you are a leader you have a responsibility and you should have respect for yourself and others’.
One of the school’s vice captains, Megan Parker added that she learnt that ‘as a good leader you should have a positive influence on younger children’.
The school leaders ‘thoroughly enjoyed the conference and found it rewarding and inspirational’.
THE LID has been lifted on the worst-kept secret in the local film and gossip trade, with confirmation this week that Megan Gale has been cast in the new romantic comedy I Love You Too, which starts
filming in Melbourne on Monday.
It is written by funnyman Peter Helliar, who also has a role alongside Brendan Cowell, pint-sized American actor Peter Dinklage, Bridie Carter and Yvonne
Strahovski, seen recently opposite Zach Levi in the madcap US action series Chuck.
Lake Mungo remake
PARAMOUNT Vantage is in the process of acquiring remake rights to the low-budget supernatural thriller Lake Mungo.
Producer David Rapsey says a deal with Paramount Vantage, the specialty division of the Hollywood studio responsible for the American versions of the cult Japanese horror films The Ring and The
Grudge, has been finalised but not yet signed.
The $1.8 million film was written and directed by Joel Anderson through the former Australian Film Commission’s IndiVision strand. Last weekend the film earned a special mention by the jury of the
Amsterdam Fantastic Film Festival, which applauded its skill and success as a pseudodocumentary.
After protracted negotiations with major distributors, whose terms, says Rapsey, make it nearly impossible for investors to recoup their money unless the film is a break-out hit, a national release
via independent distributor Paul Brennan will happen on June 5.
Elliot at Annecy
ADAM Elliot’s Mary and Max will be in competition at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. It is one of only nine features selected for the leading animation festival.
Elliot’s previous short, Harvie Krumpet, won three prizes at Annecy before going on to win the Oscar for best animated short film. The film will open in September in France through Gaumont, and this
week became the highest-grossing Australian film released this year.
Movie moments
ONLINE film journal Senses of Cinema (sensesofcinema.com) wants contributions of up to 500 words addressing ‘‘key moments in Australian cinema’’ — meaning a shot, a striking image or something more
ephemeral.
The journal, which started 10 years ago in the "frontier" days of internet publishing under the aegis of filmmaker Bill Mousoulis and Fiona Villella, has just published its 50th issue. "Key moment"
submissions must be submitted by Friday, May 15.
Cicadas at Cannes
CANNES has announced that Australian Amiel Courtin-Wilson’s short Cicada will screen in Director’s Fortnight. Courtin-Wilson is currently developing a feature with Cicada’s writer, Daniel P. Jones,
and his feature documentary Bastardy is due for release in June.
The story of a five-year-old who witnesses a murder, Cicada is the first producer credit for Sally Hussey, founder and director of filmfest@falls.
Vin rules
TAKING full advantage of the pre-Wolverine blockbuster lull, Fast & Furious had another uncontested run at No.1 over its second weekend, taking a clean $3 million and bringing its tally to a
whopping $13.5 million.
This was despite its huge 62 per cent audience drop, proving that car movies burn through their audiences as fast and as furiously as horror films.
The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas took $794,602 over 115 screens, with a persite figure of $6910, the weekend’s second highest after F&F with $8784.

Megan Gale scores film role Daile Pepper
April 30, 2009 - 11:54AM
Megan Gale has scored a role in a new Australian romantic comedy written by television funny-man Peter Helliar.
The model from Perth who stepped down as queen of the David Jones catwalk last year after she was cast as Wonder Woman in the George Miller film Justice League of America - which was then put on hold
- had been yet to take a turn on the silver screen since.
Victoria's Secret model Miranda Kerr took over the David Jones fashion parade duties when Gale stepped down from the catwalk and now goes head to head in the Australian department store wars with
Myer darling Jennifer Hawkins. Gale remains an ambassador for David Jones.
The new film, in which Helliar also plays a part, features Brendan Cowell, pint-sized American actor Peter Dinklage, Bridie Carter and Yvonne Strahovski.
Helliar and Gale's boyfriend radio announcer Andy Lee regularly appear on variety program Rove. Gale is often hanging backstage during taping of the show, with the group good friends.
This will not be Gale's first foray into film, the brunette who first found fame in Italy where fans believed she represented the new Sophia Loren, has appeared in films Stealth and Stregati dalla
luna.

New romantic-comedy begins shoot Thu 30/04/2009 03:49:57]
By Philippa Maclachlan
An all-star cast including TV comedian Peter Helliar will start shooting the new Australian romantic comedy I Love You Too next week in Melbourne.
The film, which received production funding approval from Screen Australia last December, will be directed by Daina Reid (City Homicide) and produced by Laura Waters and Yael Bergman (Summer Heights
High). Helliar, who also wrote the screenplay, said making the jump from TV to features had been his ultimate goal.
“This is really what I want to do. It’s really pure. With other stuff like writing for weekly TV, it feels a bit like a production line,” he said. “We’ve had time to cultivate it and really get it
right.”
I Love You Too has an estimated budget of about $5 million. Helliar conceived the film almost 10 years ago and pitched it to Waters when they worked on the pilot for Rove.
The cast includes award-winning actor Brendan Cowell (Love My Way, Noise) as Jim, a commitment-phobic who tries to win back the woman he loves, with Helliar as his best mate, Blake.
They are joined by Yvonne Strahovski, the Australian star of the hit US drama series Chuck, American actor Peter Dinklage (The Station Agent, Elf), former McLeod’s
Daughters star Bridie Carter, Travis McMahon (Kokoda, Good Guys Bad Guys) and Steve Bisley (Water Rats, Sea Patrol).
Helliar said the film blended romantic comedy with deeper sentiments. “I think it’s going to surprise people. We wouldn’t have got the cast we got if it was just a silly comedy,” he said.

All hands on deck to bridge the indigenous reading gap
JESSICA MAHAR
November 26, 2009
Max Dulumunmun Harrison... help for indigenous children. Photo: Glenn Campbell
A YUIN nation elder, Max Dulumunmun Harrison never went to school. But watching his granddaughter go through university made him so proud, the 76-year-old wanted every indigenous child to
have the same opportunities.
Mr Harrison implored people to make sure indigenous kids got every possible chance at yesterday's Hands Across the Nation indigenous literacy appeal event.
As part of the appeal - of which the Herald is a media supporter - Sydneysiders painted their handprints on a giant wall in Martin Place yesterday. Personalities including members of
the Wiggles, Mario Fenech, Matt Shirvington, Bridie Carter and Kerry O'Brien put their hands up in support of bridging the gap.
Thousands of Australians yesterday raised their hands to show they care about improving the literacy skills of indigenous kids.
According to the Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation, four out of five children in remote indigenous communities cannot read at the minimum standard. This week's campaign aims to
raise awareness and $3 million to expand its literacy programs running across the country.
The foundation's co-founders, Mary-Ruth Mendel and Kim Kelly, said through increased awareness and donating, Australians now had a way to support change.
''Empowering kids to help themselves is so important,'' Ms Kelly said. ''We've seen so many people's lives change because of [community programs] and it gives people choices.''
You can donate to the appealat any NAB branch or at www.alnf.org.
Former McLeod’s star Bridie Carter returns to our screens this week in a guest role as a desperate single mum on Rescue Special Ops…
One of our favourite Australian actresses, Bridie Carter, makes her long-awaited return to TV drama this week.
And while she’s only five years older than when she last played the feisty Tess Silverman McLeod-Ryan in rural drama McLeod’s Daughters, she’s been cast as the mother of a teenage boy in
Rescue Special Ops.
“I’ve never played a mother before, so it’s actually hilarious,” Bridie laughs. “I’ve been pregnant many a time in a show, but I’ve never actually had the baby. So that was really good.”
In real life, Bridie is mum to two young boys: Otis, six, and Tobias, 15 months. Tobias is the reason the popular actress, who won Dancing With The Stars in 2007, has been absent from
our screens of late.
“I decided not to work last year after having my second child,” she explains. “With my first son, I was at the Logies when he was four weeks old, and then we were filming at five weeks. I look
back now and go, ‘How did I do that?’ But you do things when you have to. I really didn’t want to do that again as it was pretty stressful, so it was wonderful to have the time off.”
Bridie, 40, says motherhood has been easier the second time around.
“I think everything’s easier because you have prior experience — definitely.”
As for young Otis, he just loves being a big brother.
“We have a great age gap of five years, so I think it’s certainly made a difference. He’s the best big brother in the world!”
But by the beginning of this year, Bridie was ready to get back to work, and the guest-starring role on Rescue came up at just the right time.
“When they offered me the job, I just said, ‘Yes, absolutely!’”
And she says that being back on the set of a TV show felt “like the most natural thing in the world”.
“After being on a long-running show for five years and then not working, you miss it,” she shares. “I’ve been [acting] since I was six, so it’s in my blood.”
In the episode, Bridie plays single mum Stephanie, whose son Todd (Keegan Joyce) has been in a dune buggy accident.
When the other boy involved in the accident dies of his injuries, the grieving father, Graham (Daniel Roberts), becomes hell-bent on revenge, so the Rescue team must step in to prevent another
tragedy.
“Stephanie knows if Graham finds Todd, he’ll kill him,” Bridie explains. “She knows the stakes are really high.”
She also notes that Daniel – last regularly seen as corrupt Detective Sergeant Jim Egan in Underbelly: The Golden Mile — is well cast in the role of Graham: “Danny’s quite menacing when
he comes into that house!”
After Rescue, fans can see Bridie in another guest role in Channel Seven’s upcoming bushranger series Wild Boys — something she admits she was excited about because of the chance it gave
her to work with horses again.
“It’s a great role,” she enthuses. “It’s really fun.”
And she says she’d be happy to take on another ongoing role in a TV series.
“I’ve had a good break now, so, yeah, I would if the right thing came along,” Bridie nods.
